The Amazing Miracle At The Jordan River
In today’s story, The Amazing Miracle At The Jordan River, we will learn how God parted the dangerous waters of a river to allow His people to cross.
You will see the amazing miracle that took place when the Priests went over Jordan with the ark. The lesson is that we must always allow God to lead and guide us. We seek His help by praying and asking for it.
This is Part 2 of the previous story titled, Commander Joshua Leads His Army. When we left off, the two spies had reported back to Joshua that the people of Jericho were afraid of Israel.
Joshua then took the next steps to conquer the land that God had given to Abraham their forefather hundreds of years before.
Joshua told the Priests to carry the Ark of the Covenant over the River Jordan
The Ark of The Covenant represented the Presence of God with Joshua and the people of Israel. It was carried around by the Priests and they also took care of it.
After receiving news from the two spies, Joshua said to the people,
‘Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.’
Joshua then spoke to the priests, saying,
‘Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over ahead of the people.”
So the priests took up the ark of the covenant and went ahead of the people.’ – Joshua 3:5-6
The Jordan River was very deep and dangerous at that time of year
This time of year the Jordan was deep and wide. It was overflowing its banks.
The priests who were carrying the ark dipped their feet into the edge of the water. An amazing thing happened!
God caused the water that came from upstream to stop flowing. The Priests carried the Ark to the middle of the river on dry ground -Joshua 3:14-16
The Priests stood in the middle of the river bed to allow all the people to cross over
The priests who carried the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord
stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan.
Meantime, all of the people of Israel crossed on dry ground. Eventually, all the nation crossed over the Jordan to the other side.” Joshua 3:17.
When they arrived on the other side, they were on the same side of the river as the city of Jericho.
God told Joshua to take 12 stones out of the river bed as a memorial
God told Joshua to take twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe. He was to command them to take up twelve
stones from the middle of the Jordan.
Those stones were to be removed from the place where the priests’ stood. The men were to carry the stones out of the river and to the place where the nation would camp that night.
Joshua 4: 2-3 (NASB).
When your children ask you about the meaning of these stones in later years, you must tell them that they are a memorial,
“Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.’
So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever.” Joshua 4:6b-7 (NASB)
