Nebuchadnezzar the king made a golden statue

Nebuchadrezzar, the king, made an image of gold. It was ninety feet high and nine feet wide. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of

After he had completed the statue, he sent for the , the governors, the judges, the treasurers, and all the rulers of the provinces. They all came together and stood before the image that Nebuchadrezzar had set up.

The herald gave the King’s command to fall down and worship the statue

Then the herald cried aloud:

“To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations: ‘The moment you hear the sound of the trumpet, flute, lute, harp, bagpipe, and all kinds of , you shall fall down and worship the golden image.

Whoever does not fall down and worship shall be thrown into a burning, fiery furnace.

The king commanded the music to be played. There were trumpets, flutes, lutes, harps, bagpipes, and all kinds of musical instruments. When they heard the music, all of the people fell down and worshipped the golden image that King Nebuchadrezzar had set up.

Some of the Chaldeans reported that three boys did not bow down and worship his image

At that time certain Chaldeans came near to the king and made a complaint:

“O king, live forever! O king, you have commanded that every man who hears the sound of the trumpet, flute, lute, harp, bagpipe, and all kinds of musical instruments shall fall down and worship the golden image.

You also said that anyone who does not fall down and worship shall be thrown into a burning, fiery furnace.

King, there are certain Jews named Shadrach, Meshach, and . You placed them in charge of the province of

These men, O king, have not obeyed your command; they do not serve your gods nor worship the golden image which you have set up.”

King Nebuchadnezzar became very angry when he heard the report

King Nebuchadrezzar became very angry. He commanded his soldiers to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and to him. When they were brought before the king, Nebuchadrezzar said to them:

“Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and , that you do not serve my god nor worship the golden image which I have set up?

I’m giving you another chance. You must bow down as soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, flute, lute, harp, bagpipe, and all kinds of musical instruments.

If you do not worship, you shall at once be thrown into a burning, fiery furnace. Is there any god who can deliver you out of my hands?”

Shadrach, Meshach, and refused to bow down.

Shadrach, Meshach, and replied:

“O king, there is no need for us to answer you. Our God whom we serve is able to save us from the burning, fiery furnace.

He will save us out of your hand, O king. But if not, know, O king, that we will not serve your gods nor worship the golden image which you have set up.”

King Nebuchadnezzar ordered his servants to heat the fiery furnace seven times hotter.

King Nebuchadrezzar became even angrier. The appearance of his face changed, as he glared at Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered his servants to heat the furnace seven times hotter than usual.

The King also commanded some of his soldiers to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to throw them into the burning, fiery furnace. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were bound in their cloaks, their tunics, their robes, and their other garments.

The soldiers threw them into the burning, fiery furnace. The fiery flames killed the soldiers who threw in Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Meantime, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego fell down in the middle of the burning, fiery furnace.

King Nebuchadnezzar was extremely shocked that the fire did not kill Shadrach, Mesach, and Abednego.

Nebuchadrezzar, the king, was so astonished that he rose up hastily. He said to his counselors, “didn’t we throw three men, bound, into the fire?”

His counselors answered, “true, O king.” Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed:

But I see four men, unbound, walking in the midst of the fire. They are unhurt, and the fourth looks like the Son of God.”

King Nebuchadnezzar worshiped God because He had delivered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Nebuchadrezzar went near to the door of the burning, fiery furnace. He said, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out.”

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the fire. The , governors, and counselors saw that the fire had no power over the bodies of these men. They were amazed that the hair of their heads was not singed and that their cloaks were not harmed. They did not even smell like the smoke of the fire.

King Nebuchadrezzar said,

“Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He sent his angel to save his servants who trusted in him and refused to obey the king’s command. They refused to serve or worship any god except their own.

Therefore I give this command. Every people, nation, and race that shall say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be cut in pieces. Their houses shall be made an ash-heap.

There is no other god who is so able to save as is this one.”

The king then gave high positions, in the province of Babylon, to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
